Bucket seat or recliner? How to choose a sim racing seat

The short answer

Choose a bucket seat if you race competitively and want to be held firmly in place under braking. Choose a recliner if comfort over long sessions matters more, or the rig doubles as a gaming chair. If you have a formula chassis, choose a formula seat made for that reclined position.

Why the seat matters

Your seat is your reference point. If your body shifts every time you brake hard, your foot pressure and hand position change too, and consistency suffers. A well-fitted seat keeps you planted so the pedals and wheel feel the same lap after lap.

The three types

Bucket seats wrap around your hips and shoulders like a real race car seat. They're rigid, supportive and the most authentic choice, but they're firmer and harder to get in and out of.

Recliners are padded and adjustable, like a comfortable car seat. They're easier to live with for long endurance stints or for using the rig for other games, but they let you move around more.

Formula seats are shaped for the legs-forward, reclined position of an open-wheel car.

What we stock

To fit and adjust your seat, add the Sim-Lab Sparco seat slider ($40) or a Sim-Lab bucket seat bracket set. Prices are current at the time of writing. Shop seats.

Four questions to pick your seat

1. How do you race?

Short, intense sprint races and leagues reward the support of a bucket. Long sessions, endurance events and casual driving favour a recliner.

2. Will it fit you?

A bucket seat that's too narrow is uncomfortable within minutes, and one that's too wide doesn't hold you. Check the seat's dimensions against your build. Contact us if you're between sizes.

3. Will it fit your chassis?

Seats mount to the chassis with brackets, and often a slider so you can move forward and back. Check that you have the right mounting parts for your cockpit before you order.

4. Who else will use the rig?

If family or friends will drive it, a slider makes it quick to adjust between drivers, and a recliner suits a wider range of sizes.

Our recommendation
  • Competitive racing on a GT chassis: a bucket seat, such as the ASR Bucket or Sim-Lab S1
  • Long sessions or a shared rig: the ASR Recliner or Premium Recliner
  • Formula chassis: the ASR Formula Seat
