Rig-mounted or freestanding? How to choose a sim racing monitor stand

The short answer

Choose a freestanding stand if you run a strong direct drive wheelbase or a motion system, because it keeps vibration off your screens. Choose a rig-mounted stand if space is tight and you want a compact setup. Then pick the stand that matches your screens: a single monitor or TV, an ultrawide, or triples.

Why the stand matters

Where your screen sits changes how fast the car feels and how well you judge distance. The closer the screen is to your eyes, and the lower it sits behind the wheel, the more natural the view. A good stand lets you put the screen exactly there and keep it still.

Rig-mounted or freestanding?

Rig-mounted (integrated) stands bolt to your chassis. They take up less floor space and stay aligned when you move the rig. The trade-off is that wheelbase and pedal vibration travel into the screens.

Freestanding stands sit on their own feet around the rig. They isolate your monitors from vibration from a high-torque wheelbase or a motion system, and they're easy to adjust independently of the seat.

Single, ultrawide or triples?
  • Single monitor or TV: the simplest and cheapest. Works well when the screen sits close behind the wheel.
  • Ultrawide: a wider view from one screen, with no bezels and a single cable.
  • Triple monitors: the side screens show you mirrors, apexes and cars alongside. Most serious sim racers end up here.
  • A 4th screen: mounted above or below for telemetry, timing or a stream.

Triples ask more of your PC, so check your graphics card can run three screens at the frame rate you want.

Four questions before you buy

1. What size and weight are your screens?

Each stand is rated for a maximum screen size. Check yours, and allow for the weight of TVs, which is often much higher than monitors.

2. How much floor space do you have?

A triple freestanding stand needs room on both sides of the rig. Measure the full width, including the side screens angled in.

3. What else shakes the rig?

The stronger your wheelbase, and especially if you add motion, the stronger the case for freestanding.

4. Will you upgrade later?

If triples are in your future, start with a stand that can grow. The ASR single heavy-duty stand has an upgrade kit to a 43" triple, so you don't pay twice.

Our recommendation
  • Small space, single screen: a rig-mounted single stand
  • Single screen now, triples later: the ASR single heavy-duty stand with the upgrade kit
  • Triple monitors with a strong wheelbase or motion: an ASR or Sim-Lab freestanding triple stand
  • Big TVs: the ASR 50" or 65" triple TV stand
