The short answer
If you race a variety of cars, or it's your first proper wheel, choose a GT wheel. If you mainly drive F1 and other single-seaters, choose a formula wheel. If you drive rally, drift or classic cars, choose a round rim. Whatever you pick, check that it fits your wheelbase before you buy.
What's the difference?
GT wheels have a larger rim, often round or D-shaped, so you can turn through more steering lock. Buttons and rotaries are laid out like a GT3 or Cup car, and the grips are comfortable for long stints.
Formula wheels are compact and wide, with handles instead of a full rim. Everything sits within reach of your thumbs: dense button layouts, rotary encoders and dual clutch paddles for launches. Limited steering lock suits open-wheel cars but not slow, tight corners in road cars.
Round rims give the most lock and the most natural hand-over-hand steering, which rally, drift and classic cars need.

Four questions to pick your wheel
1. Will it fit your wheelbase?
This is the most important question. Wheels attach with a quick release, and not every wheel works on every base out of the box. Some need an adapter, and some features (like screens or LEDs) only work within one brand. Check compatibility on the product page, or contact us with your wheelbase model and we'll confirm it.
2. What do you drive most?
- A mix of cars, GT, touring or road cars: GT wheel
- F1, IndyCar and other single-seaters: formula wheel
- Rally, drift or classics: round rim, like the Simagic Neo X 330T rally or 350W drift wheel
3. How many buttons do you need?
Endurance and multiclass racing in iRacing or Le Mans Ultimate means adjusting brake bias, traction control and ABS on the move. More rotaries and buttons help. For casual racing, a simpler wheel is lighter and easier to learn.
4. Do you want to swap rims later?
Simagic's Neo X Hub ($179) takes interchangeable rims from $49, so one hub can become a GT, round or D-shaped wheel. Add paddles, quick releases and more from our steering wheel add-ons.
Our recommendation
- Not sure, or race a bit of everything: a GT wheel
- Mostly F1 and single-seaters: a formula wheel, paired with a formula chassis
- Rally, drift or classics: a round rim
- Want the real thing: a licensed replica from VPG, GRID, Cube Controls or Sim-Lab
